Do you know your citizenship status? Submitting your N-400 form and supporting documents is just the first step. Your application will go through different stages before you officially become a US citizen, so it’s essential to know where you are in the process. First, it eases your nerves and stress because you won’t feel lost. Second, it helps you prepare in advance for each stage you’ll need to complete.
But if you’re not sure what your citizenship status is or how to check it, don’t worry. Today, I’m going to break it down for you!
What is the status of the citizenship process?
As I mentioned earlier, once you submit your N-400 form, your case begins a journey through the different stages of the USCIS system. These stages indicate your current citizenship application status, enabling you to understand what’s happening and what to expect next.
In most cases, your citizenship application will go through five main statuses. This assumes that everything goes smoothly and that you don’t need to submit additional documents, retake your interview, or test.
Stage 1: Case Received:
The first stage you will see is “Case Received.” This means that USCIS has received and entered your application into their system. But, keep in mind this status won’t appear the moment you send your citizenship application. It may take some time, especially if you mailed your N-400 since mailing and processing can take up to two weeks. So, don’t worry if you don’t see this status right away.
Once USCIS receives and processes your application, you’ll receive a confirmation letter. This letter will include your case number, which you should keep safe and secure. You will use this number to track your case online or by phone throughout the process.
At this stage, USCIS hasn’t yet reviewed your documents or made any decisions, but your application is now ready to begin processing.
Stage 2: Biometrics appointment scheduled.
Next, your case will move to the “Biometrics Appointment Scheduled” status. This means that USCIS has scheduled your biometrics appointment. You will soon receive a notice with the date, time, and location of your appointment.
At your biometrics appointment, USCIS will take your fingerprints and photo to check your background and confirm your identity. You must attend this appointment, as USCIS cannot proceed with processing your application until this step is completed.
Stage 3: The interview has been scheduled.
After you complete the biometrics process, your case will change to “The citizenship interview has been scheduled” status. And yes, this means that you will finally have your citizenship interview and test. The USCIS will send you a letter with the date, time, and location of your appointment.
During the interview, an officer will ask you questions about your application, travel history, and background. You will also need to take the English and civics tests. This is one of the most crucial steps in the process, as USCIS will determine whether you meet all the requirements to become a US citizen.
It’s crucial to prepare thoroughly for this day, including studying for the tests and reviewing the questions they may ask you about your N-400. The best way to prepare is to practice mock interviews and test questions.
Also, make sure to arrive early and dress appropriately for your interview. If you’re not sure what to wear, check out our blog post, “What to Wear for Your Citizenship Interview“.
Stage 4: Oath Ceremony scheduled:
This will likely be your favorite status update during the citizenship process. It means that you have finally reached the end of your journey and will soon become a US citizen. All that’s left is to attend your naturalization ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance.
Sometimes, the Oath Ceremony can take place on the same day as your citizenship interview, so you might not even need to check this status. If that’s not the case, don’t worry. USCIS will send you a notice with the date, time, and location of your ceremony.
Stage 5: Case approved!
After your ceremony, your case will show as “Case Approved.” At that point, you are officially a US citizen and will receive your Certificate of Naturalization, which serves as official proof of citizenship.
You can then apply for a US passport, update your Social Security status, and enjoy all the rights and responsibilities that come with citizenship.
How to check your citizenship status online
How can you check the status of your citizenship application? The good news is that it’s easy to do through your MyUSCIS account. Once you submit your N-400 form, you will receive a case number that you can use to check your status online at any time.
If you submitted your application online, you’re already registered in the system and can check your case without taking any additional action. If you mailed in your N-400 form, you’ll need to create a USCIS account and add your case using your case number.
This tool helps you track every stage of the process so you always know what’s happening with your application and what to expect next.
