U.S Passport Application Timeline 2026: How Long It Takes

By Karla Alvarez

This 2026, the U.S Department of State will maintain the passport application timeline used in 2025. The standard processing time for a new or renewed passport remains 4 to 6 weeks, while expedited service takes 2 to 3 weeks.

If you require your passport in under a week, you must request urgent service. With this option, your passport may be ready within 24 to 72 hours. However, this service is reserved for genuine emergencies, and you must provide a compelling reason and supporting documentation when applying.

How long is it taking to get a passport in the U.S right now?

According to the U.S. Department of State’s official website, standard passport processing time is 4 to 6 weeks. But in some cases, the total timeline can be as long as 10 weeks.

Why?

Mailing time is not included in the processing estimate and can add an additional 4 weeks to the total wait time.

First, it can take up to 2 weeks for your application to reach the processing center. Then, once your passport is approved and mailed back, it may take another 2 weeks to arrive at your address.

However, you can speed up the mailing process.  For an additional fee of $21.36, you can receive your passport in 1 or 2 days. Keep in mind that this express mailing option is only available for passport books, not travel cards.

Is the timeline for U.S passport applications fixed, or can you receive your passport sooner?

Yes, it is possible to receive your passport earlier than the estimated time, even with the standard service.

The processing time for U.S passports varies depending on the office where you apply and how busy it is at the time. Some passport agencies simply handle a higher volume of requests than others.

Think of it like airline travel. There are peak and slow seasons. But instead of ticket prices going up, it’s processing time that increases here.

Because of this, some people end up waiting the full estimated time — or even longer. Others are fortunate enough to receive their passport in a week or less.

If you look through the comments on the Department of State’s social media channels, you will find stories from applicants saying their passports were ready in under 6 days.

Processing time also depends on how thoroughly you prepare your application. Missing documents, incorrect forms, or incomplete information may delay the process. Even small mistakes can trigger extra review and cause delays.

For this reason, it is essential to double-check:

  • Your application form
  • Supporting documents
  • Photos
  • Payment

It is also important to regularly check the status of your U.S passport application. This way, if there is a problem, you can respond quickly instead of losing valuable time.

And if you realize you need your passport sooner than the standard timeline allows, you can request expedited service.

How fast can you get a passport with expedited service?

If you request expedited service, the processing time for a U.S passport is usually reduced to about 2 to 3 weeks. This option is helpful if you need to travel within the next month and don’t have your passport yet.

But how much does the fast-track fee cost?

Currently, the expedited service costs an additional $60 on top of the standard passport application fee.

It’s important to keep in mind that this charge only covers processing. Mailing is not included. Shipping can still take up to four weeks, unless you pay the additional fee for one- to two-day delivery.

What is the fastest way to get a U.S passport?

The fastest way to obtain a U.S passport is through the urgent travel service.

In these cases, your passport may be ready in 24 to 72 hours.

However, this option is not available in every situation. You can only request urgent service if you meet certain criteria, such as:

  • You have international travel scheduled within the next 14 days and do not have a valid passport.
  • You need to apply for a visa within the next 28 calendar days to take that trip.
  • You must travel outside the United States due to a serious illness, injury, or death in your immediate family.

To request urgent processing, schedule an appointment at a passport agency. You can do this before or after submitting your U.S passport application.

If you request service before applying, you must use the Online Passport Appointment System. There, you will explain your situation and upcoming travel plans to confirm your eligibility. You will also need to provide your email address, as the system will send the appointment code to that address.

If your application is already in process, you must call 1-877-487-2778.  The phone line is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. ET and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET.

If you are deaf or hard of hearing, call 1-888-874-7793 for TDD/TTY teletype services.

How Long Does It Take to Renew a U.S Passport?

The timeline for renewing a U.S passport is very similar to that for a first-time application. With the standard processing time, it usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, plus an additional 4 weeks for mailing.

You can also request expedited service, which may reduce processing time to 2 to 3 weeks, excluding shipping time.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to renew by mail, online, or in person.

For example, if your previous passport was issued less than 15 years ago, you were at least 16 years old when it was issued, and it is still in good condition, you may qualify to renew by mail without visiting an office.

Additionally, if you are 25 or older and your passport will expire within one year or has expired within the last five years, and you are not changing your name, sex, date of birth, or place of birth, you may be eligible to renew online.

These are only some of the requirements for each option. You can find the complete and up-to-date criteria on the U.S Department of State’s official website.

Final thoughts on the U.S passport application timeline

Depending on the service you choose, the full process of applying for or renewing a U.S. passport can take anywhere from three to ten weeks.

  • With standard service, processing usually takes 4 to 6 weeks. With expedited service, processing time often drops to 2 to 3 weeks, though this option comes with an additional fee.
  • In addition, you must consider mailing time unless you pay extra to receive your passport in 1 or 2 days.
  • Urgent service is also available and can deliver a passport within 24 to 72 hours, but only in exceptional circumstances.

All of these timelines assume that your passport application is complete and error-free. If something is missing or incorrect, the process can take even longer.

That is why it is so important to review everything carefully before submitting.

  1. Great guide, but one question on renewing a passport using a passport agency and the “urgent travel” category, with a ticket for international travel within 14 days. In the guide it indicates the Urgent Travel works for applying for a new passport, but does it work for renewing one? I recently discovered that I have less than 6 mos left on my passport, which is required by the country I am visiting in a week.

To answer your question, yes, you may be able to request urgent service to renew your U.S. passport if you are traveling in fewer than 14 days. The first step is to schedule an appointment at a passport agency. If you haven’t submitted your renewal application yet, you can usually schedule the appointment online. However, if you have already submitted your application and have not yet received your new passport, you will need to call 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 (TDD/TTY) to request urgent travel options.

On the day of your appointment, be sure to bring proof of your upcoming trip, such as your flight ticket.

We hope everything goes smoothly and that you receive your passport in time for your trip. If you have any other questions, please leave a comment. We’re always happy to help!
