The Citizenship Application Tracker is the official IRCC tool that shows you exactly where your application stands. This portal allows you to track your progress in real time and provides a comprehensive overview of every stage of your file.
Before you start, there’s one thing you need to know: You must create a new account for the Tracker. Your old GCKey or login won’t work here.
Also, don’t try to sign up right away. You must wait for your Acknowledgment of Receipt (AOR) letter to arrive first. This letter contains your application number and user ID (UCI), which are the “keys” you need to link your information to the Tracker.
What you need to check your Canadian citizenship status online
The first rule of tracking your citizenship status is to be patient. You can’t check your status until you receive your Acknowledgment of Receipt. This letter confirms that the IRCC received and verified your application.
Inside the letter, you’ll find your Unique Client Identifier. It’s like a permanent ID number for Canadian immigration, and you’ll need it for every step moving forward.
It usually takes two to six weeks for the AOR to arrive. Once you have it, you can set up your online account.
How to set up your tracker account
To get registered without any headaches, remember: skip the GCKey. You need to create a fresh login. Follow these official steps to get started:
- Head to the Registration Page: Go straight to the Official Tracker Registration Portal.
- Verify Your Identity: The system will ask for specific details found right on your AOR:
- UCI (Unique Client Identifier): Enter your 8 or 10-digit ID number.
- Enter Your Personal Info: Type in your last name exactly as it appears on your application, along with your date of birth.
- Set Up Your Credentials: Enter a valid email address (we recommend using the same one from your application)
- Confirm Your Code: Check your email for a verification code. Type it into the portal to activate your account.
- Log In and Explore: Once you’re verified, just log in with your new email and password to see your personal citizenship timeline.
How to understand your citizenship application status
Once you log into the Tracker, you’ll see a dashboard displaying six key stages. Each stage operates independently, moving at its own pace.
The 6 stages of the citizenship process
1. Background check:
This mandatory security screening is performed by IRCC. The IRCC teams up with the RCMP (federal police) and CSIS (intelligence services) to ensure there are no criminal records or security concerns.
This is usually one of the first stages to wrap up. However, if it stays “in progress” for a while, don’t worry. Delays often occur due to communication lags between agencies. As long as they haven’t asked for more evidence, you’re in the clear.
2. Physical presence
This is where the officer verifies that you did the math correctly. They verify that you were physically in Canada for at least 1,095 days during the 5 years preceding your application.
They cross-reference your data with the Canada Border Services Agency’s (CBSA) entry and exit records. This stage is usually one of the last to be completed, often moving in step with the language requirement.
3. Language Skills
If you are between 18 and 54 years old, the IRCC must confirm that you can speak basic English or French (CLB 4 level).
They will review the certificates you submitted, such as IELTS, CELPIP, or Canadian/foreign diplomas.
For applicants under 18 or over 55, this stage usually shows as “Not Applicable” or is completed automatically.
4. Citizenship Test
This section tracks all things related to your citizenship exam.
You will see when your invitation was sent, your testing window, and, finally, your results.
Even if the system shows your score immediately after the test, it may take the Tracker 10 to 20 days to change to “Completed.” An officer needs that time to manually verify that you took the test correctly and followed all the rules.
5. Citizenship Interview
Not every applicant needs an interview. Whether you have one depends on your specific case and on how satisfied the officer is with your paperwork and test results.
6. Citizenship Ceremony
The citizenship ceremony is the final step before you receive your certificate.
Here, you can see when you have been placed on the waitlist for a virtual or in-person ceremony.
This means they are finalizing the details. You’ll soon receive an invitation letter with instructions for your big day.
Status levels for each stage
Inside those 6 stages, the system assigns a specific Status so you know exactly what is happening:
- Not Started: The officer hasn’t opened this part of your file yet.
- In Progress: This is the longest phase. It means IRCC is actively verifying data or your file is simply waiting in the “work queue.”
- Completed: The officer finished the check, made a decision, and closed that stage. Once a stage hits “Completed,” it almost never moves backward.
- Waiting for your action: Pay attention to this one. It means the process has stopped because you need to do something—like booking a test, sending fingerprints, or uploading a document.
